Hola!
The count down for Spring Break 2012 is officially underway and it is lining up to be one of the best Spring Breaks ever!!! I don't know how much of a break it is going to be; I might need a week off to recuperate when we get back to the States.
We are excited to be a part of a medical mission to Nicaragua over Spring Break. This a new adventure for the School of Nursing and one that we are hoping will be the start of a wonderful tradition.
Building on the specialties of the supervising faculty, the group will be providing screening and education sessions with a focus on cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and nutrition. The faculty and students have divided into three groups with these as their primary topics. The goals of these groups are to provide teaching to high-risk or newly diagnosed patients. The preparatory class work has included lectures from guest speakers in topics such as Nicaraguan history, Spanish for beginners, Nicaraguan cardiovascular and diabetes epidemiology, cultural competence, and global heath stewardship. We are hoping to post updates and pictures daily while in Nica - we'll see if the Wifi at our hostel allows us.
Our clinical time will be divided between Mascota - a Children's Hospital and Centro Nacional de Oftalmologia - an eye hospital
Here's the link to the children's hospital. It's a lovely website.
